At Wensley Roofing, we believe that building strong roofs starts with building strong careers.
Since being established in 1987, investing in people has always been at the heart of what we do. Today, we’re proud to say that 9% of our workforce is made up of apprentices – a figure that reflects our long-term commitment to developing the next generation of skilled roofers in the North East.
For us, apprenticeships are not simply about training. They are about creating real career pathways. Many of our apprentices choose to stay with the business after qualifying, progressing through the company and becoming highly valued members of our team.
This year alone, we’re celebrating the success of five apprentices who have just achieved their qualifications – a fantastic milestone both for them and for the business. At the same time, we are supporting two newer apprentices who are at the beginning of their journey with us, learning the trade and developing the core skills that will shape their careers.
Managing Director Steven Luke comments:
“Developing young talent is hugely important to us as a business. Apprentices bring fresh energy and a willingness to learn, and we’re committed to giving them every opportunity to succeed. Seeing five of our apprentices recently qualify is a fantastic achievement – not just for them, but for the whole team. It shows that the pathway works. We’re equally excited to welcome new apprentices into the business and support them as they begin their careers.”
A key part of our apprenticeship success is our strong partnership with Optimum Skills, a respected North East training provider.
Through this partnership, our apprentices receive structured, industry-recognised training alongside hands-on site experience. Every apprentice at Wensley Roofing is put through all of the standard training required for the trade, ensuring they gain the qualifications, safety knowledge, and technical expertise needed to excel in roofing.
This blended approach of combining classroom learning with real-world experience, ensures apprentices develop into confident, competent professionals who are ready to contribute fully to projects of all sizes.
Steven adds:
“Our partnership with Optimum Skills is extremely valuable. It allows us to support apprentices properly, ensuring they receive the right training while gaining meaningful site experience. We don’t just want apprentices to qualify, we want them to build long-term careers with us. That’s how we continue to grow sustainably as a business.”
By maintaining a strong apprenticeship programme, Wensley Roofing is not only investing in its own future but also supporting the long-term sustainability of the roofing industry.
With qualified team members progressing through the company and new apprentices joining the ranks, we are proud to be playing our part in developing skilled tradespeople for the future.
